Very similar to the previous question :)

After going through the excellent research resources available here (and thanks for that!) I don't think that this can be a cannonball, but my question is what is it? A counterweight was suggested, but why the intricate molding of an interior space rather than just having the squarish hole go straight through?

Anyway, it was recovered from the bottom of the Connecticut River near Northampton, Ma. in an area that has been pretty heavily used since at least the 1650s. Any clues as to what it is are appreciated. Also, can I just spray it with rustoleum and call it conserved??

Thanks,
Sean
