Who would carry this sword?

Hey sorry I don't have a picture but I have a sword that could be an officer's but I'm not so sure. I says on it 1864 NJ, and it has three strings of metal strung around for a knuckle guard. Obviously it's for a Union Officer but it's pretty heavy and a little long, maybe it could be a calvalry officer's. Also it has a wooden handle with twine spiraling around it.

Maybe #W0550? Anyway, these were pretty common types used during the war by the cavalry, but infantry officers were known to use them as well.
