    Leonidas Polk Memorial Service

Hi Gang, I had the opportunity to attend yesterday's ( June 16, 2007 ) memorial service commemorating the death of General Leonidas Polk, The Bishop General of the Confederate Army. As you recall, General Polk was killed by a direct hit from a Union artillery shell on June 14th, 1865. He was...

    Funny Bullet Find

Hey Gang, Last night the wife was working the grill and I was reading Foster's book on the MXT. I decided to try some of his "trash elimination" techniques. I grabbed the detector and walked a few feet from the house. This area is full of nails, roofing materials, general odds and ends...

    Iron Items

Hey Gang, I found a number of iron relics lately. Some I've cleaned, some I've not. Help identify ? One that I cleaned was a length of chain with a large ring on one end and what appears to be a small ring on the other. This item was VERY deep ( more than 10 inches ) and was extremely...

    Kepi Hat Button Number 2

Hi Gang, Found this yesterday on the property, along with associated nails, 22 shells and pop tops. I wish I had taken a "before" photo. This thing was crusty and corroded. Warm soap and water didn't much help, so I went to the Top Job cleaner. I let the button soak for a few minutes then...

    Hot Rock Yields Bullets

Hi Gang, Thanks to input from KC Steve and Bama Dave, I found these three bullets when I dug some Hot Rock signals from my MXT. They all were the same depth ( about 10 inches ) and in the same area ( radius of about 5 feet ). This was in an area that I had previously hunted pretty hard...

    Sunday Finds

Hi Gang, Went out for a few hours today. Found a couple of dropped 3 ringers, what may be part of a pocket watch and what may be a boot heel plate. The bottom bullet was found in a creek bank, about to fall into the creek. After I pinpointed it, all I had to do to expose it was move some...

    Disc - Flattened Bullet ?

Hi Gang, I found this yesterday in an area with several dropped bullets. The relic is lead and has patina that matches well with the found bullets. I went to my reference books and found a page in the M&M showing disc made from flattened bullets. Uses were as dog tags, checker pieces, poker...

    Bullet Deformities

Hi Gang, These are 3 of the dropped 3 ringers that I found Saturday. This is similar to another grouping found back in April that resulted in my posted topic "Field Molded Mini ?". We had quite a discussion on the real possibilities that field casting of bullets actually took place. All of...

    Carved Bullet - Acorn ?

Hi Gang, I found this carved bullet on Saturday. It appears to be an acorn. I have seen similar carved bullets in the relic books and in the MM book. Notice the rings at the acorn "top" match the dimensions of the 3 ringers found in the same area. If this is an acorn, it could provide...

    Saddle Hardware ?

Hi Guys, I found this elliptical ring near the area where I found the broken horseshoes. It appears to be iron but in fact is BRASS. Maybe it's a strap ring for a saddle or some type of tack-related item ? The ring is 3.25 inches long and 1.25 inches wide. No breaks or openings, one...

    Small Unknown Buckle

Hi Gang. I need some help here. This thing looks too small and too delicate to be Civil War. I'm thinking a cat or small dog collar buckle ? Measurements are LENGTH: 1.75 inches, WIDTH: 1.0 inches. Any input is appreciated. Thanks ! Rodney

    Union Infantry Coast Button

Hi Guys, This is my first button with an "I" in the shield. It's in rough condition, making me a bit nervous about cleaning it. I used a little water and a soft toothbrush but that's as far as I would take it. As you can see the back appears to have NO markings. Rodney

    Civil War Axe ?

Hi Gang, I found this a few days ago and cleaned it. At first, I thought that I had found my first shell ! Big hunk of rusty iron, deep. Had to be a shell, right ? NOPE. Anyway, is it Civil War era ? I think not but I have no way to tell for sure. Thanks for the help. Rodney

    Button ID ?

Hi Gang, A friend of mine asked me to post this. Pretty sure it's not Civil War era, most likely earlier. Not even sure if it's military. It's 0.6 inch in diameter, has no writing on the back, the letters T * L under a crown and the letter V at the bottom. Any help is appreciated. THX. Rodney
